Is Sculptra painful?

How many treatments will I need?

Sculptra is typically performed as a series rather than a single treatment. Many patients receive approximately three sessions, although one to four treatments may be recommended.

Appointments are generally scheduled about three to four weeks apart. The number of treatments and amount of product used depend on:

When will I see results?

Is there any downtime?

• Temporary firmness or small lumps beneath the skin

These effects are usually mild to moderate and often improve within several days, although some may last longer.

How should I prepare for treatment?

Before your Sculptra appointment:

Patients are commonly instructed to massage the treated areas:

• For five minutes
• Five times per day
• For five days

This is often called the 5-5-5 rule and helps distribute the product evenly. Follow your provider’s specific directions, since instructions may vary.

You may also be advised to:

• Apply a cold pack wrapped in cloth during the first 24 hours
• Avoid placing ice directly against the skin
• Avoid strenuous exercise for the first 24 hours
• Minimize extensive sun exposure
• Avoid tanning beds and ultraviolet lamps
• Avoid saunas, hot tubs and extreme temperatures temporarily
• Wait until the skin is intact before applying makeup

What are the possible risks?

As with any injectable treatment, Sculptra carries potential risks. Common reactions include swelling, tenderness, redness, bruising, pain, itching, bleeding and temporary lumps at the injection sites.

Small papules or deeper nodules may occasionally develop beneath the skin. Some appear weeks or months after treatment and may require medication, injections or, less commonly, surgical treatment.

Other possible complications include:

• Infection
• Prolonged inflammation
• Skin discoloration
• Persistent lumps or granulomas
• Changes in skin texture
• Allergic reactions
• Asymmetry
• Scarring

Unintentional injection into a blood vessel is rare but can cause serious complications, including skin injury, vision changes, blindness or stroke.

Seek immediate medical attention if you develop unusual or severe pain, whitening of the skin, vision changes, facial drooping, weakness, numbness, difficulty speaking, severe headache, dizziness, confusion or difficulty walking during or shortly after treatment. (FDA Access Data)

Who is a good candidate for Sculptra?

Sculptra may be appropriate for healthy adults who want gradual, natural-looking improvement in facial wrinkles, folds or age-related collagen loss.

Who should not receive Sculptra?

• A history of keloids or hypertrophic scarring
• An active infection or inflammatory skin condition in the treatment area

Treatment may also need to be postponed or avoided during pregnancy or breastfeeding because safety has not been established in these groups.

Tell your provider about immune-system conditions, bleeding disorders, medications that suppress the immune system and any difficulty with normal wound healing.

Can Sculptra be combined with other treatments?
